Rabbi Dr. Jacob Immanuel Schochet was a fierce defender of Jewish tradition. Included among his many accomplishments was his expertise at countering Christian missionary and cult activity directed at Jews.
Rabbi Schochet was not one to shy away from controversy. In January of 2012 he issued a strong censure of Shmuley Boteach's book, Kosher Jesus. Although Rabbi Schochet was not opposed to interreligious discussions of a moral and ethical nature, he was very much opposed to interfaith theological dialogue.
JewishIsrael's Rabbinic Director, Rabbi Sholom Gold, was very saddened to hear the news of Rabbi Schochet's passing and he relayed the following:
"During the years that I was in Toronto, J. Immanuel Schochet was a good friend and he worked with me in Ner Yisrael Yeshiva. He was a true intellectual and a person who was able to see with great clarity."
